Spam Assassin

Editors Overall Rating: 7 out of 10

The Low Down: Spam Assassin is a great program for UNIX systems with spam mail problems. After set up, it simply takes your email away from you inbox and puts it in a designated place. It is flexible and has a great design to make it easy for you to control your email accounts and stop spam from wasting your time.

Features: System-wide filters allows Spam Assassin to test every email message you receive. You can control the searched characteristics and change the system settings to assure your email gets sorted correctly for your entire server.

User-specific filters allow specifications for individual addresses. Every user can set up their own preferences.

Spam can be delivered to a special mailbox, deleted to another address, forwarded... virtually anything you prefer!

Cons: Spam Assassin is a free program, and offers very little technical support. The Spam Assassin website (http://spamassassin.org/) offers some support, but it is best to do a search in Google (http://www.google.com) for serious issues and problems you may have.

Password Safe

Many computer users today have to keep track of dozens of passwords: for network accounts, online services, premium web sites. Some write their passwords on a piece of paper, leaving their accounts vulnerable to thieves or in-house snoops.

...Others choose the same password for different applications, which makes life easy for intruders of all kinds.

With Password Safe, a free Windows 9x/2000 utility from Counterpane Labs, users can keep their passwords securely encrypted on their computers. A single Safe Combination--just one thing to remember--unlocks them all.

Password Safe protects passwords with the Blowfish encryption algorithm, a fast, free alternative to DES. The program's security has been thoroughly verified by Counterpane Labs under the supervision of Bruce Schneier, author of Applied Cryptography and creator of the Blowfish algorithm.

Password Safe features a simple, intuitive interface that lets users set up their password database in minutes. You can copy a password just by double-clicking, and paste it directly into your application. Best of all, Password Safe is completely free: no license requirements, shareware fees, or other strings attached.

Password Safe is a product of Counterpane Labs, the research arm of Counterpane Internet Security, Inc. Counterpane Internet Security, Inc. offers leading-edge expertise in the fields of 24x7 intrusion detection and prevention, preemptive threat discovery, forensic research, and organizational IT systems analysis.

Protect Against Spyware on your PC

Adware is known by many names--spyware, trackware, or even Big Brotherware. While producers of adware claim its purpose is merely to collect information about Internet habits in order to deliver ads tailored to a surfer's interests, privacy advocates are concerned about the potential misuse of this data. We were recenty made aware of a program that was designed to locate and remove SPYWARE from your system. It is called AD-AWARE!

Ad-Aware Website

Where does spyware come from? Most likely it was installed alongside that free software widget that you downloaded just last week, without you even noticing.
Ad-aware identifies and removes these surreptitiously installed applications. Using updateable "reflists," which are sort of like antivirus DAT files, Ad-aware scours your system--including Registry and temporary Internet files--and looks for traces of recognized adware modules. When it's finished searching, it displays a list of what it found and lets you select the items you'd like to remove from your system. And when coupled with its companion program, RefUpdate, you're always assured of using the most comprehensive list of adware to search for. The main drawback is that some ad-supported programs, such as GoZilla Free, will no longer function if you remove their ad modules. If privacy is your main concern, Ad-aware will help keep you anonymous on the Web.

The latest release detects even more adware modules and includes several minor fixes and improvements.
